Why not leave it to October

Revenue already gets the data

Under the Common Reporting Standard, IBKR reports your account balance and income to Revenue every year.

CGT is due before the return

Gains from January to November must be paid by 15 December — late payment costs 0.0219% interest a day.

The 8-year trap

EU-domiciled ETFs trigger a deemed disposal after 8 years: tax is due even if you never sold.

Questions

How are shares bought through IBKR taxed in Ireland?

Gains are subject to Capital Gains Tax at 33% after the €1,270 annual exemption. Dividends are income: income tax at your marginal rate plus USC and PRSI.

Why are my ETFs taxed differently?

ETFs domiciled in the EU, EEA or an OECD treaty country are investment undertakings: 41% until 2025 and 38% from 2026 on gains and distributions, no loss relief, and a deemed disposal every 8 years.

When do I pay CGT?

By 15 December for disposals from January to November, and by 31 January for December disposals. The gains are then reported on Form 11 by 31 October (mid-November on ROS).

Can I offset losses?

Losses on shares offset gains in the same year and can be carried forward indefinitely. Losses on EU ETFs cannot be used.
