Why get it right

CRA sees the slips

T5008 and T5 slips go to the CRA. Wrong cost bases are one of the most common reasons for reassessment.

T1135 penalties

Foreign property over CAD 100,000 must be reported: $25 a day late, up to $2,500 per year — more for gross negligence.

Losses that don't count

Buy the same stock within 30 days of a loss and the loss is denied. We flag every case.

How it works

1

Download your statement

In the IBKR Client Portal: Performance & Reports → Statements → Activity → Annual, format CSV.

2

Upload it here

We match every sale with its purchases and convert each amount at the official rate of the day.

3

Copy the figures

See your tax and every line for your return — free, with an Excel file.

How to export the statement from Interactive Brokers

  1. In the IBKR Client Portal open Performance & Reports → Statements.
  2. Under Activity choose Annual and the tax year (add earlier years so sales match their real purchases).
  3. Choose CSV (or HTML), click Run and upload the file here.
  4. Alternatively: an Activity Flex Query in XML with Trades, Cash Transactions, Open Positions and Corporate Actions.

Questions

How is the adjusted cost base calculated?

All identical shares are pooled: ACB = total cost in CAD (purchase price plus commissions, converted at each trade's rate) divided by the number of shares.

What inclusion rate applies?

50% of a net capital gain is taxable. The proposed increase to two-thirds was cancelled in March 2025.

What is a superficial loss?

A loss on a sale where you (or an affiliated person) buy the same property within 30 days before or after. The loss is denied and added to the cost of the new shares.

Do I need form T1135?

Yes, if the total cost of your foreign property exceeded CAD 100,000 at any time in the year. Shares in a non-registered IBKR account count.
